Adult Calligraphy

Chinese calligraphy is more than the art of writing—it is an expression of rhythm, character, and emotion through brush and ink.

From ancient inscriptions to the development of Seal, Clerical, Regular, Running, and Cursive Scripts, each style reflects a distinct cultural spirit and aesthetic language. This course offers structured training across different script styles, combining calligraphy theory, brushwork techniques, classical model studies, and creative practice. Students will gradually develop a deeper understanding of Chinese calligraphy while building a strong foundation in brush control, character structure, and composition.

Course Content

Seal Script

One of the earliest forms of Chinese writing, Seal Script is known for its ancient elegance, balanced structure, and rounded lines. The course explores both Large and Small Seal Scripts, introducing their distinctive forms and brushwork.

Clerical Script

Originating in the Qin dynasty and flourishing during the Han dynasty, Clerical Script is characterised by broad, flat structures and distinctive horizontal strokes. Students will explore its rhythmic brushwork through classical stele works such as the Cao Quan Stele and Zhang Qian Stele.

Regular Script

Regular Script is recognised for its balanced structure, clearly defined strokes, and disciplined brushwork. Through classical models, students develop a strong foundation in stroke techniques, character structure, and composition.

Running Script

Fluid and expressive, Running Script bridges the formality of Regular Script and the freedom of Cursive Script. Students learn connected brush movements, natural writing rhythm, and variations in ink and composition.

Cursive Script

Cursive Script emphasises movement, rhythm, and expression through simplified structures and flowing lines. Students explore the relationship between brush movement, spatial composition, and ink variation to develop greater freedom and expressiveness in writing.
