Mineral Pigment Painting is a distinctive branch of contemporary heavy-color painting that centers on the use of natural mineral pigments. Colored minerals are ground into fine powders, mixed with binding agents, and applied to surfaces such as paper, fabric, wood panels, metal, and walls. Historically, traditional Chinese gongbi and heavy-color paintings relied heavily on mineral pigments. However, with the rise of literati ink painting during the Song and Yuan dynasties, ink-based aesthetics gradually became the dominant artistic tradition.
After being introduced to Japan, the use of mineral pigments was preserved and further developed, profoundly influencing the Japanese painting system. In the 1980s, Yancai experienced a revival in China and has since become an important force in the development of contemporary Chinese painting. Through the layering of mineral pigments with varying particle sizes and textures, artists create rich surfaces with sculptural depth and luminous color, revealing the unique beauty of natural materials.
Paper Mural Experience Workshop
Artwork: Dunhuang Buddhist Figure
This workshop is inspired by the Buddhist figures found in Dunhuang murals, offering participants an opportunity to experience the traditional colouring methods of mural and heavy-colour painting. The unique texture and absorbent quality of hemp xuan paper allow mineral pigments to build up in subtle layers, creating rich colours and an elegant, time-worn aesthetic reminiscent of ancient wall paintings.
Throughout the creative process, participants will learn fundamental Dunhuang painting techniques, including line drawing, colour shading, and layered glazing. Using natural mineral pigments, they will gradually develop the skin tones, garments, and background elements of the figure while exploring the harmonious relationship between line and colour that characterises traditional Buddhist art.
In the final stage, participants will refine tonal balance, colour transitions, and decorative details to achieve the soft yet profound visual qualities associated with Dunhuang murals. Through this process of careful layering and observation, each participant will complete a Buddhist figure painting that embodies the timeless beauty of Dunhuang art while reflecting their own artistic expression, ready for framing and display.
